Ruffian’s Ryder Cup
Result: 12-3 Win
This year’s event took place at Richmond Park on Friday July 22nd and Saturday July 23rd. Ludlow brought a team of 8 men and 2 ladies, captained by Michael Hinks-Edwards (an ex. RPGC member) and including their club professional, Dan Francis. RPGC were represented by Paul Appleton, Jon Cooper, Julian Diamond, Paul Grand, Peter Harrington, Toby Hunt, Dave Marsh, Richard Owen (2005 team captain), Ian and Julie Smith.
The first day’s four-balls went well for RPGC, with a 4 to 1 lead built up for the second day. The Ruffian’s dinner took place on Friday night at the Orpheus Greek restaurant in Richmond. The RPGC team left the restaurant shortly after midnight but the Ludlow team stayed on well into the early hours.
Saturday’s singles started at 11am and the momentum built up by the RPGC the previous day was continued. All of the RPGC players played well and the final landslide result (RPGC 12 points, Ludlow 3 points) was the biggest victory in the competition so far. All of RPGC’s players scored points for the team on Friday, Saturday or both days.
At the presentation ceremony after the match, when the Ryder Cup was handed back by Ludlow, we were thanked for our hospitality and promised a stern test next year at the racecourse.
These are photos of Friday evening at the restaurant.
Monthly Medal
LADIES
Carding a 3-under-par net 68, the July Monthly Medal was won by Rosalind Lake. There were 3 net 73’s in second place, with Kate Friswell coming out on top on the back 9. Results…
Due to a bucket hole on the 5th temporary green, this was a non-qualifier for handicap purposes – so Ros’s handicap remains intact!
MEN
Two superlative scores were returned from winner Stuart Nash (57) and Adrian Wilder (62). Results…
Stuart’s 57 could have been a lot lower if he’d not had an 8 on a par 4 and might well have broken the Club net over the last 12 years or so.
Due to the size of the hole on the temporary 5th green, the competition was a non-qualifier for handicap purposes. Scratching heads and with hands tied (try it) , the Handicap Secretary’s Office was unable to cut Stuart due to CONGU decision 15 regarding clause 19 (the ‘observation’ clause) since a low score in a single event is not sufficient to justify a cut. Rest assured however that Stuart and Adrian’s performance will be held under close review. Men’s handicap list…
Following an informal request to the course operators, holes cut conforming to the size defined in The Rules of Golf should now appear on any temporary green.
The impact of the results on the Grand Medal Trophy reveal only 2 players having completed 5 rounds (& without disqualification) – a deserved Julian Diamond leading on 359 followed technically by myself 48 behind -so with 3 rounds left it’s still very open. R5 Leader board…
Association Trophy
Ruskie Hall took the first 3 places with Alan Barclay the winner on 66 – considering RH only had 7 entrants this is a remarkable achievement. Leading the way for RPGC was Ian Smith 4th 68 and for the ladies, Norma Lynch and Jini Beacham both with 69s. Results…

Whitewebbs – Team B Rd 3 at Sandown Park
Result: 1-4 Loss
The team comprised Sheena Harrington, Di Jackett, Maureen Slade, Julie Smith and Tracy Wright.
Spirits were not high going into this match as most of the team had not so fond memories of the course – which is a 9-hole one in the centre of the racecourse. We’d also been warned that since the new management had taken over it was not possible to book tee times so we would have to turn up and hope that the public weren’t out in force. Fortunately, despite the glorious weather, we had no delay in starting and only one other 2-ball slotted in between our games on the second nine.
Our one victor was Julie Smith with a tight tussle that went to the 17th, sadly the rest of us were not so fortunate. One good piece of news from our Treasurer’s perspective is that they very kindly gave us courtesy of the course, so there is no cheque to write Dave!
Despite beating us soundly our opponents were very friendly and we each enjoyed the games, followed by some shopping in the newly opened Discount Golf Shop – so something good came out of it after all!
