President’s Putter

Posted in Competitions

The President, Tim Meyer,  nearly won his own competition, but was beaten by Paul Brown an Cuneyt Sazer who amassed  42 points each. Despite Cuneyt’s 26 points on the front 9, he was beaten into second place by Paul Brown who had the better back 9, but who also had 3 back-to-back birdies in the front 9. Tim took third place with 40 points, ensuring that his offer to buy a drink for anyone who beat his score, was limited to just Paul & Cuneyt. With the 3 shot allowance for the men, the first placed lady was Joan Mulcahy just one shot behind on 39 points. Results…

Maureen Slade, Paul Brown and Cuneyt Sazer recorded the only twos of the day on holes 3, 5 and 5 respectively.

The nearest the pins, on the 10th, were won by Toby Hunt for the men and Nina Humphreys for the ladies. The two handicap secretaries were the winners of the ‘nearest the pin in two’. Paul Grand taking this for the men on the 17th and Sheena Harrington on the 18th for the ladies. It should be noted that Sheena then took a further 4 shots to complete the hole, unlike Paul who had a far more conventional 2 putts.

Rickmansworth Friendly

Result: 3½-2½

A most blustery day saw RPGC host Rickmansworth for the home leg of the annual friendly on “Dukes Phase 2”. A new look Richmond Park 12 was nearly an 11 due to the volume of traffic on Sutton Court Road. Having overcome that initial hurdle, it was a case of tiring out the visitors with the trek to the first tee.

There were a number of close matches, and at one stage RPGC trailed 1½-2½. Our players coped better with the at-times 3-club wind, though, and won the final two matches to pip Ricky at the post.

In the associated RPGC sweep, Steve Cross and Rick Smith won, collecting a commendable 48 points.

So a repeat of the 3½-2½ score line from the last two years. However, with our new-found depth, we are optimistic that the away result of (6-0) will not be repeated!  And  we might manage the first overall win for several years.

The date for the away leg is 17 August.

Diamond Jubilee

Keep to the fairway and there would be no problems, but for many this looked to be a forlorn cause judging from the number of NRs and the occasional double-digit score recorded on many cards. It obviously didn’t present a problem to Charles Ajani with a net 67. Just one shot behind on 68 was Nigel Ward. Veronica Mitchell, celebrating her birthday pipped John Ahad into 3rd place on the back 9, both with net 71s. Both Veronica and John had a run of pars on the front 9 and John still pulled off a 71 with an 11 on the 12th. Results…

In the Anniversary Cup, Steve Cross leads followed by Veronica Mitchell, one shot behind after the first two Jubilee events. R2 Leader board…

Ladies

The sunny weather of the previous week did not prevail for the June medal. Another small field on the 9-hole Prince’s course saw Susan Smith emerge as the winner on a net 76 from Julie Smyth on 79. This was a reduction only round. Results…

Men

More than half the field scored in the 60s but CSS was raised 1 from SSS 64 because only 3 Cat 1-3 scored within buffer of SSS. Accordingly, players got cut by more than they may might have envisaged.

The winner was in-form John Fordham with a net 60 with a hitherto rare appearance from Abdul in the placings coming second a shot behind. Results…

Ahmad leads the associated Grand Medal Trophy on 261, 6 clear of nearest rival Steve Cross. R4 Leader board…

Some highlights from the round included an eagle 3 from Mark Jenkins on 13 and a 330 yard drive from Osman on 3rd.  The Glendale ‘tea-hut’ remained closed having been vandalised 2 weeks ago.

JQ Robertson

Posted in Competitions

The first Sunday of June showed signs of heralding the start of summer but the warm, wet weather of the previous weeks made the rough penal for those who strayed off the fairways.

A new signature will adorn the JQ Robertson trophy, with Alan King beating the men’s handicap secretary, Paul Grand, on the back 9 with a score of 42 points. In third place, and continuing his run of form was our junior, Ahmad Al-Bader on 41 points. Results…

With the course changes and the difficulty in organising the games now, the men need to remember to add 3 shots to their scores in a stableford competition on the Duke’s to take full advantage of their shot allowance (although the first lady was in 11th place).
