Weekday Captain’s Day
Almost perfect conditions for golf at the park today. The greens are drying up rapidly. But the rough was not as bad as in previous months. he fairways were still very helpful for the “shorter” hitters.
Alan played like a King today. His numbers state the obvious: 4 birdies (1,5,11 and 12), 23pts + 22pts, 2 PU’s and 45pts walking off the 18th green. The 2 PU’s prevented from competing/winning (?) in today’s putting challenge. 2 other players are very grateful for that. After a rough couple of weeks Rob W played of a slightly higher HI. He took advantage of the extra shots. 2 birdies (5,17) and 20pts +23pts earn him 2nd place. Chris R had another excellent outing. “Only” 22pts on the back 9 and the countback rule force him to settle for 3rd. Peter G had no eagle today. But 20pts (out)/22pts (in) and 4th place represent a good day at the office. There is some more good news for him a bit later. Jose Manuel G’s round was the mirror image of Peter G’s round. 20pts on the back earn him the last “money spot”. A small shout out to Ed R. He had a better front 9 than Alan K (26pts). He even had 29pts walking off the 10th. The rest was a bit harsher.

Golden Jubilee (50yrs 1924-1974) (Top Dog 5/7)
Bright but breezy conditions for the Golden Jubilee.
Katharina Katte shot a consistently spectacular 44in 44out gross 88 net 66 to win. 2 chased with 68s -Paul McGrath just edging Gina on countback. Duncan followed with 69.
This was 3rd Jubilee from 4 in the Anniversary Cup and we see 3 women leading – Cheryl continues 1st on 210 now from Katharine 215 and Lia 217. Indeed, these are only players to have played all 3/ not NR’d to date (see breakdown of the scores lower down in the report).
For the men this was also the 5th competition in the Top Dogs:
Brian and Raymond continue to lead senior division with18 pints each; but making a late charge is Kerry who gained 12 points for 4th.
In the junior Paul M now leads on 28 from Dilip 26.
Midweek August Medal (MGMT R6/8)
A reduced field enjoyed excellent golfing conditions. Enjoyable temperatures, not the slightest threat of rain were a welcome change to the recent golfing conditions. Recent rains had rendered the greens a lot more receptive than during the previous months. So today felt more like a round of target golf rather than links golf. There was still more than enough roll/bounce on the fairways. But judging distances into the greens wasn’t as tricky as 5-6 weeks ago.
Seymour Laird carded an outstanding score of 62 (Net). This was even more remarkable since he was +5 (gross) after 2 holes. But he steadied himself. The remaining 16 holes were taken care of with a score of +12 (gross). His only regret can best be described in his own words: “I should’ve signed up for the sweep”. Places 2-3 go to early birds and some of the better ball strikers in the club. Both Naveed and Ross recorded 4 birdies today on their way to scores of 64 (Net). Naveed had the better (net) score on the back 9. So he takes 2nd place. Places 4-5 go to the other players in my flight (good things seem to happen to people in my flight …). Uli had brain freeze on the 1st hole (7). But he showed great poise to record a score of 66 (Net). Alison’s decision to sign up for the sweep really paid dividends today (don’t think HMRC will tax your sweep payments though). 2 snowmen are the only blemish on her card. Else she would’ve challenged for the top honours.
2 shoutouts:
– An Gardner birdied 2 par 3’s today (a first)
– Richard B birdied … 5 (!!!) holes today
MGMT:
Chris R 362, Gina 368, B Norman 368, Graham C 375, R Owen 379. But Pralab with 4 recorded results and a score of 279 is in prime position.
Monthly Medals
A quieter day after storm Antoni yesterday but still breezy.
Women
The women seemed to be playing a different course from the men who seemed to have no problems today but the scores were all so different from 2 weeks ago and not in a good way!
But well done to Hilary who kept her body warmer on for the whole round which was perhaps the secret. She nearly blew it on the 18th but was fortunate to find her first ball under the trees on the left, rather than being where her 2nd went which was OB, but looking at the 5 shot margin she would probably still have beaten Lia but ended up with 72.
Men
Henry L-B continued his winning form from Wednesday to triumph with a net 63 – winning overall and senior division; Henry was just 2 over par on the back 9. He was pressed by Will B with a remarkably consistent 66 sharing back 9 honours. 3rd in the senior division was Michael Hayden 67.
The junior division was close with 64s from Oz and Capt. John Ahad. Oz just won on countback. Third was Gerard with another good round – 65.
This was the 6th Grand Medal round of 8 and senior division leader is Will B, 12 ahead of Tamas with 328 points; the junior is headed by Duncan 345 from Dilip 349.
Midweek August Plate
Rain had been forecast for the midweek August plate – reduced field accordingly.
Mainly dry for early games but blustery and odd heavy showers developed before continuous rain caught later games.
Early starter Henry L-B had the right idea -after 2 birdies Henry stood 2 under par on the 4th tee [10points] and finished with 37points David C also had good start – being one under par after 3 holes [also 10 points] but was just nipped on countback on the last 3 holes.
Justin W prevailed with best back 9 19 points . All best to Mayumi – think last round in UK.
Midweek July Plate
It was fine and dry for playing the July Plate with rain not arriving until after play.
José emerged the splendid winner with 43 points which included a ‘blob’ on his front 9 22 pts; another fine round from Richard O 41pts edged on countback another level par round from Jay – they both scored 23 on front 9 and had 2 birdies. Henry and Alan K battled for 3rd place both 40pts; Alan’s front 9 19pts held mixed fortunes – 3 birdies and 2 ‘blobs’.
Brian R had best back 9 23 pts.
Founders Cup – J Nicholas (6/6)
A very early shower but it brightened to sunshine. First Wednesday comp with red penalty area right of 17 and 18.
The very early clubhouse leader Gina held the position throughout and started and finished with birdies for 43 points. Well done Gina!
Richard Marriott challenged with 41 points and another good round from Capt Sheena gave her 3rd place. Secretary Peter H had super back 9 – 21 points but with blob at 18.
This was final round of the Founders’ Cup and sees the winner Gina leap-frog Chris R to win Cup on 153 points -9 clear of Chris with Peter H a further 7 behind.
The Captains’ Day (Top Dog 4/7)
Unseasonably windy for July and first competition with red penalty areas on 17 and 18.
As with previous 2 years the Captains’ Day was won by a woman and this year women took first 5 prizes. Reiko came out top 6 from Mayumi and Ali 68s then Capt. Sheena and Doreen 69s; best men with 71s – Brian M, Paul McG and George T.
Aidan and Silvia had the best front9s whilst Raymond did the same on the back 9 – all in 39
Ed H added to the men’s Sunday eagle tally this year with first at 3rd.
For men this was 4th comp in the ‘Top Dog’ and as attached we find Brian M and Raymond on 18 leading the senior division from Toby. Dilip maintains his lead26 from Onursal. 18.
Women led the associated putting competition with Ali just edging Sheena with 27s [Sheena 2 ‘zeroes’]; Brian M took men’s with 26 putts.

Claret Jug
The field enjoyed pretty decent golfing conditions. Still plenty of roll on the fairway. Looks like some greens on the front 9 were cut. The rough remains enemy number 1 for most players. But all in all the course seemed there for the taking. And that is what a lot of players did. Prime example was the 18th hole. On that hole in particular players did take full advantage of the white tees being (temporarily) moved up.
Best of the class today was Julian. He enjoyed a decent start. But he then went on to record birdies on 11 and 17. That was part of a 35 gross back 9 (aka 26 net). Just enough to finish as the best of 3 players on 62 (net). Today’s Runner-Up was on a Headingley high. Alison copied the JJ method: solid on the front 9 (48 gross – 33 net) and excellent on the back 9 (42 gross – 29 net). Last member of the 62 gang is Chris Rudkin. He finishes 46 (gross – 31 net) and 45 (gross – again 31 net). Very well played all 3.
Early starter Pralab was leader in the ckubhouse for a quite a while. The highlight of his 64 net was an eagle 2 on the 15th. Angus recovered in time from a demanding golf trip on Monday to shoot 74 gross (65 net). He probably could’ve challenged the group on 62 had it not been for 3 3-putts in the first 5 holes. PCC adjustment looks likely. So the HI adjustments could be more muted than anticipated.
Monthly Medals
Early rain dissipated to give a sometmes breezy day.
Women
A select group of 6 today and seems the women found it a touch tougher than Joe G who has recorded a gross 70 (as per below), to match Lia’s net score today. A fair number of matches both internal and external reduced both fields, but the effect seemed to help the speed of play!
Pretty pleasant conditions for golf though think the rain of yesterday had softened things up a bit.
Congrats to Lia on her win by 1 shot today.
Men
Joe G (aka Mr. 59) shot a lifetime best net 59 to win the July Medal by 3 shots – well done Joe. Joe was 35 out and 35 in coming on top of a win at Coombe Wood yesterday and is set for an overnight WHS ESR of -1.0 to take his HI from11.2 to 9.2 and back to single figures.
Tamas shot an amazing net 62 [34 gross on back 9] for second place whist Jay shot level par 68 (net 63) and best gross of the day. Well done indeed – Joe, Tamas and Jay get the senior division sweep.
4th overall and junior division leader is Sean with excellent 64 with James Cridland and new member Craig. Most encouraging.
This was the 5th round from a possible 8 for the Grand Medal Trophy and Tamas is leader of senior division by himself being only player to have played all 5 rounds. In the junior division Duncan T leads with from Dilip 277 and Anthony W 279 – all after 4 rounds.
