Midweek August Plate
The day started with light rain but as predicted became dry and pleasant.
Scoring was generally good with over half the field scoring 30+.
Colin Price was out to beat his own age but apparently missed out by one, howver he topped the scoring with a sparkling 42 points. Wishing he had entered the sweep!!
Tom Simpkins , Chris Rudkin and Richard Marriott all scored 40 points but Tom came second on countback with Richard 3rd. Ed Robinson just pipped Bridget Stone both on 36 points. Well done Bridget being the leading lady.
A mention about Ian Burgess who scored a 4 on the 4th hole for 4 points. Must be his lucky number!
Jeremy Prescot got a 2 on the 10th for 4 points.
Diamond Jubilee (60y 1924-1984)
A very warm day for the Diamond Jubilee.
A fine 66 off 19 earned David Grace the trophy; some excellent rounds from 2 women followed – Pat Barbour 69 and Doreen Dolby 70 – well done ladies! Peter Harrison and George Taylor followed with 70s beaten on countback with George dropping just 1 shot on front 9. New club champion Will Balakrishnan took back 9 honours of 37 (1 over)
This was 3rd of 5 Jubilees in the Anniversary Cup and with his 73 today Gunnar Sundberg has stablished a 2 shot lead on 220 from Mike Assender and Paul Kamerling.
A good turnout of 67.
Club Championships – round 2
Women
Congratulations to Silvia who retains the Women’s CC with ease as there was little challenge from the rest of the field. The winning margin was 22 so lack of fierce competition didn’t affect her focus.
Of the chasing pack things started with positive signs but both Susan & Sheena fell apart at various times as Lia continued to plot her way round the course with her fairway irons keeping her out of trouble.
The overall result being 1 & 2 for Silvia & Lia in the gross, reversing positions in the handicap comp. Rather amazingly in the nett, Silvia, Susan, Cheryl & Sheena all finished today’s round with the same nett score.
On the back 9 today there was the same number of pars as there were quadruple (or worse) bogeys!! But highlight of the day must go to Susan’s eagle on the 8th. On the green for 2, she calmly sunk a long putt for the 3.
Men
A Warm and humid day with sun for second round of the Club Championship. Not a fast round.
In the senior division Will Balakrishnan built on his first round gross 70 with a 2nd round 82 for a total of 152 to win the Club Championship by 13 shots from 152 from Richard Inglis and Raymond Esin both 165; well done indeed Will! Tied in 4th were Justin Wildman and Paul Kamerling 167s. Fine golf from all and Duke’s proved as always more difficult to score.
In the junior division Paul Green maintained his lead 173, 7 ahead of Jim Deissler 180 with Alan Treacy, Robin Thomas and Adrian Wells having 184s.
Chris Melllish secured front 9 honours 39 and back 9 went to Sam Goodchild-Way.
The Handicap Trophy awarded as follows:
Senior
Richard Inglis 138 building on fantastic first round 63
Justin Wildman 140
Will Balakrishnan 144
Junior
Paul Green 139
James Deissler 144
Adrian Wells 149
In the net (and sweep) results by division for the day the senior went to Justin Wildman 69 followed by Duncan Matthews 70 whilst the junior went to Paul Green 71 then James Deissler 75 .
Club Championships – round 1
Women
No real surprise that Silvia is leading after today’s round, but a little disappointing that none of the rest of could get close to her. So after 18 holes Silvia has a 13 shot cushion, but there is competition for the runner-up with 3 within 3 shots.
In the nett, Lia is 1 shot ahead of Silvia with the pair of them having a nice little cushion on the rest of the field. With only 8 women playing in both rounds, just the one handicap trophy will be awarded.
Conditions were pretty nice out there with the added bonus of some sun which wasn’t really expected. A pity then that most of us failed to take advantage of it.
Men
Some sun and wind but no rain for round 1 of the Club Championship.
Outstanding golf from Will Balakrishnan secured the first round scratch lead with gross 70 – just 2 over par and best front and back 9s; well done indeed. Chasing him with superb 74s were Paul Kamerling and Raymond Esin (Paul just 1 over on back 9. In the junior division Paul Green established a 2 shot lead on 84 from Jim Deissler 86; the in-form Alan King and Adrian Wells had excellent 87s.
The senior handicap division shows Richard Inglis leading with a fantastic 63 playing off 13 -dropping just 1 shot on the back 9 excellent 69 then Duncan TAck 9. James Deissler followed with Duncan Taylor 70.
A number of NRs with thick rough causing loss of balls etc.
J Q Robertson (Top Dog 4/7)
Perfect conditions for the J.Q. Robertson trophy – sunny start with cloud building to stem the temp. and little wind.
This suited the clear winner on the day – Alan King 42 points – 21 out and 21 in (40 gross out and in) with reduction in HI. Another fine score from Will Balakrishnan of 40 captured 2nd place from Justin Bradford. Ben Dickey 39 beat Louis who as best of 37s from Henry Lindesay-Bethune and Peter Needham, Peter had best front 9 22pts and Ed Hall the back also 22 pts. Of interest 25 men played off white tees and 21 yellow.
Best woman was Reiko Hashimoto 33 pts.
This was 4th comp in the men’s Top Dog:
In Senior Division Will maintains his lead 28pts from Kerry Sargeant 16 ; In Junior Gunnar Sundberg still leads 18 pts from Richard Inglis 16.
The Claret Jug
A pleasant and warm day with a gentle breeze. Fortunately no rain for a change.
38 players competed and only 6 No Returns. Staying out of the long grass was definitely the order of the day. The early starter Raymond Esin set the early target of net 66 off 10 handicap and nobody could overtake him. Paul McGrath was just 1 off the pace with his net 68. There were 4 players with net 89’s. Among them was Gina Jillett who had the best female score on the day.
MW July Medal (MGMT 5/8)
A warm cloudy day with the odd quick shower. A choice for the men of White or Yellow tees which only really made a difference on 3 or 4 holes.
Division 1 winner is Gina Jillett and a net 69 followed closely by Sheena Harrington with a net 71 on countback with Kim Chaffart and Richard Owen.
Division 2 winner is Peter Harrington with a net 67 with Adrian Wells in second with net 69.
Dave Cato was in line to win until recording a 10 on the 11th hole but maintained his form to take 4th Place.
Gina and Peter each win a glass tumbler for July’s medal day.
The Centenary Trophy
It started cool and there was drizzle before the sun eventually broke through for the new Centenary Trophy.
Well done to the winner Paul Kamerling with 64 – 6 ‘3s’ , 3 birdies out in level par, best gross and a likely reduction in HI to single figure. The long-standing leader in clubhouse with an excellent 67 was Joan Mulcahy. There followed outstanding 68s from Mel Dunn, Richard Inglis and Paul Green.
Special mention to Aidan Hurley for his eagle 3 off the whites at the 17th making 4th men’s Sunday eagles.
This was the 2nd competition in the Anniversary Cup which sees a tie after 2 events Gunnar Sundberg, Mike Assender and Paul Kamerling 147s.
Midsummer Trophy
The round was played in bright sunshine and little wind. The temp was around 29 degrees for those who weren’t among the early starters.
The top 8 scores were all 36+ points with two ladies leading the way. only 3 holes did not have a birdie scored and only hole 7 had no pars either! The easiest hole for scoring was 14th with 3 birdies and 16 pars.
Very well done to Avi who made it look easy for her 40 points with 21 on the front 9 and 19 on the back. She also had a blob on the 10th!!
Shaw Cup (Top Dog 3/7)
Sunny periods to start and it warmed up until clouded over; good conditions and turnout – 62.
Scoring was extremely close with 4 37s and 5 36s atop the leaderboard. Overall winner being Toby Hunt [could have been better but for ‘blob’ on 8th] on a back 6 countback from Will Balakrishnan again 1 under par gross for back 9; James Burr’s 37 edged Richard Smith’s on the last 3 holes. Fine 36s from Paul Fulham [22 back 9], Justin Wildman, Niamh Grace (best woman), Ben Fisher and Dilip Mailvaganam.
Gunnar Sundberg shared front 9 honours with Dilip despite ‘blob’ at 2nd. Lady Captain Cheryl recovered her ‘lost’ wedge and well done for a birdie at the difficult 7th
This was 3rd in Top Dog [attached] for men with Will leading the senior division 20 from Kerry Sargeant; Gunnar Sundberg leads the junior 18 from Richard Inglis.
