Shaw Cup
An auspicious day in the life of RPGC. Following 9 years of working from our portacabin after the pavilion burnt down today saw the first event to be played from the Chohole Gate location of the new building. With the white board having been transferred across, there was a degree of comfort in being able to see the order of play, if not the first hole.
One result of the changes, was that no one was aware that the men now get 4 shots on the Duke’s course in a mixed competition and that with the forward positioning of the white tee on the 16th (the old 10th) it was a par 4 from there. So the published scores for the men will be different from the ones they recorded on their cards.
The winner of the Shaw Cup and continuing his run of good form is Ahmad Al-bader with 42 points, reducing his handicap by a further 2 shots to 32. In second place was Steve Cross on 40 (if only his football team could do so well!) with Darrin Siiankowski and Nigel Ward one shot further back. Results…
Berry Holding-Parsons scored the only 2 of the day.
New Club House And Location
The new Club House comes into use today at Chohole Gate, located in Norstead Place, London SW15 3AS. Details…
If travelling towards London on the A3, take the next exit road on the left after the ASDA junction.
If travelling towards Kingston on the A3, turn off at the ASDA junction, first left at the mini-roundabout, take the underpass beneath the A3, filter in to the A3 heading towards London, and in 300/400 yards turn first left into Norstead Place.
Ladies Invitation
The winners were Alison Chadwick & Nick Rogers, and the runners-up Sheena Harrington & Steve Cross.
Spring Mixed
The first of the year’s mixed competitions was held on Saturday 13th April. Whilst not blisteringly hot it was the first of the better days of the year and the competition was fiercely fought with Nina Humphreys and Osman Chaudry missing out by one point to Jayne Maxwell and Paul Grand who scored 39 stableford points.
The rain at the end merely drove us all inside to finish the sandwiches and wine provided and we now look forward to a good turn out in May for the Ladies Invitation.
Coronation Cup
In early Spring conditions, competition was fierce for the Coronation Cup with good scoring generally. Indeed, there were 16 scores returned in the 60s.
The winner emerging was Darrin Siankoski with 62. Darrin kept a 6 off his card and his irons and putts were a joy to watch. Second was Susan Smith with an especially tidy back 9 crowned by a birdie on 18. In 2 weeks time that would be an eagle off the new Duke’s card – well done to Susan!
In third place was Hiro who shot the best gross – 3 over 71. Results…
Sweep
On the coldest Easter Sunday on record, 28 hardy souls ventured forth to play on a very empty course.
The 3 ladies’ results are not included as it is not possible to play a combined competition on a course with no SSS – but we would have needed a lot of shots to beat the winner.
As the scores seemed to get better in the later games, one can only assume that the early frozen ground didn’t help – either that or the extra sleep did!
The winner was Chris Jones with 43 points, followed by John Fordham on 42. In third place with 40 points was Osman Chaudry who beat Ed Henery on the back 9. Results…
Three Sixes Sweep
14 hardy souls turned up at the Park for a 6-6-6 sweep in occasional blizzard conditions on the Dukes course. 13 lasted the course, which remains very wet and muddy.
The winners are:
- Guy Williams 14 stableford points on holes 1 to 6
- Ed Henery 22 strokes on holes 7 to 12
- Ken Ukoku plus 1 bogey on holes 13 to 18
