We were drawn in the first round against Wycombe Heights, who have a hill top par 70 course on the North Downs, just off junction 3 of the M40. Their course was almost the opposite of the Richmond Park courses, having lightening fast greens with plenty of borrow, numerous bunkers, lots of elevation changes, and very well drained.

Under these conditions our away team of Ian & Graeme, Jon & Phil, and Richard & Jason scored a creditable 95 stableford points, pipping the Wycombe home team by two points.

In the home leg, played on Dukes, our team of Dave Williams & Tom, Toby & Paul Appleton, and Dave Winter & Paul Patching notched up 100 stableford points, but were marginally outshone by the big hitting Wycombe away team, who finally got the measure of the very slow greens on the back 9.

As the overall result was a tie, the back 9 scores were calculated. Wycombe beat us both home and away probably due to their superior fitness (all those hills at Wycombe) and therefore go through to the next round, where we wish them all the best.

This years Clapham Common started with a match against Wexham Park. The format is Greensomes (pairs who both drive and then select the preferred ball and alternate shots from there). Teams are of twelve aside with three pairs playing at home and three going away. The games are all played at about the same time and the team with the most stableford points wins.

The home team for RPGC unusually played on the Princes course. Richard Owen captained them to a 9 point win against Wexham’s away team with our team averaging over 35 points a pair – a good result in the conditions. The away team also excelled themselves averaging over 38 points a pair, pulling out a 1 point victory away from home to achieve a 10 point win overall.

It was particularly pleasing to field two new team players in Nick Heale and Sandy Willison, both of whom acquitted themselves splendidly. We look forward to keeping them in the team and adding other new members this year. You can’t help feeling that we could be quite formidable if we could field our strongest team….

The Club eased through the first round of the Men’s Clapham Common Shield with some fine results. More…

Richmond Park’s excellent run in this year’s Clapham Common Platinum Shield & Ellis Cup finally came to an end in the Area Final, when we came up against the strong team from Hoebridge A.

It was a close match that we only narrowly lost 220- 211. This has been by far our best performance in this NAPGC event for the past few years and perhaps a stepping stone for the future, with several new team members and pairings blooded this year.
