Winter Comp Rd 6 / Dukes Eclectic Rd 3
Ladies
Although the weather continues to be cold with snow and rain, ten ladies turned out to play the third round of the Eclectic competition on the Duke’s course.

The winner on a back 3 count back was John Morris from Richard Kenwood – both 39 points. Third was Jim Deissler 38 and 4th Toby Hunt. Playing inspired golf (no doubt from his net 60 the previous week), John made the galleries come alight with a hole in one at the 9th – and treated fellow competitors to the customary drink afterwards in the clubhouse. The high incidence of Category 1-3 players returning within 2 of SSS 66 (38), CSS was actually reduced to 65 (increased to 39 points) with the unusual result of no handicaps being reduced, even to decimal places.

Ladies
Three teams entered the February team event and the clear victors were Sonia, Susan and Veronica with 72 stableford points. The other teams managed 69 and 68 stableford points and shall remain nameless. Results…

4-Ball Better-Ball
Last Sunday following the dinner dance a novel Ambrose Texas scramble was played. The winners by .7 on 56.2 were Messrs. Hunt, Grand, Sargeant and Owen 6 under par from Mandelbaum, Abbott, Cross and Kenwood. At the 17th, the team of Messrs. Eden, Forbes, Myers & Smith recorded an eagle. Results…

Greg Albertyn had a glorious round to win Winter Comp Rnd 5 with 46 points, 2 ahead of Matt Mandelbaum and 4 ahead of Kerry Sargeant and Nigel Ward. Kerry shot level par for his 42 points but was rewarded with elevation to Category 1 status. Results…
Toby Hunt maintains leading position in the Winter Competition, now just 1 ahead of Kerry. Graeme Syme is well poised in 3rd position, needing to better 30 points in one round to advance. In the associated Prince’s Eclectic, Kerry has a commanding four shot lead on 61, ahead of Toby and Graeme.

Ladies
A lovely warm (relatively) and sunny day, a welcome respite after all the recent snow and rain brought benign conditions although the greens were soggy. The winner was Jayne Maxwell with 33 points followed by Cheryl Woodhouse with 31 points who pipped Susan Smith (also with 31 points) on the back 9. Results…
This competition was played neither off the red tees nor off the ladies winter mats and so was not played on a measured course (as defined in CONGU UHS) hence it was not a qualifier for handicapping purposes.

Kerry Sargeant (38 points) emerged the winner on a pleasantly sunny day following recent wintry conditions. He edged Steve Cross on the back 9 with a commendable one over par back 9. Ladies

A small but quality field competed in a stableford sweep the day after Boxing Day with the competition winner being Yuki Horo Ushido (40 points) and sweep winner Paul Grand (38) – with men ceding 2 shots to Cheryl Woodhouse the sole lady. Results…

Paul Doran and Stewart McDonald triumphed with 40 points, five ahead of Paul Grand and Cheryl Woodhouse. Results…
The popular format of American Greensomes incorporated a first for the club – play off own tees but score using the ladies’ par and SI. Confusing for some, but the orthodox recommendation of CONGU, the national governing for handicapping in the UK, is as follows –
“……use of the Ladies’ Par and Stroke Index is recommended as this does not then require ladies to play holes than have a lower Par than CONGU would recommend. It does mean that the men will return somewhat higher scores than against their own Par however to do otherwise would militate against ladies making an appropriate contribution.â€
Christmas Hamper
With men and ladies playing off mats, men ceded 2 shots. The winner was Philip Midgeley-Carver with 39 points on a back 9 count-back from Aidan Hurley. John Morris and Matt Mandelbaum posted creditable 38s to take 3rd and 4th places. Kate Emanuel played well to take best ladies’ position. Results…
Captain Richard Owen, playing in the same game as Philip and Aidan, was treated to a fine display of golf and competition – Philip shooting 1 under par gross and Aidan level par. Philip had an immaculate start – 3333.
