Monthly Medal

Posted in Competitions

Ladies

The first monthly medal of 2011 was won in style by the lady captain, Susan, with a net 69 which was five shots in front of Rianda in second place on a net 74. After last week’s mud bath it was a cold but much drier day, both underfoot and overhead, but with the exception of these two, the scores for the ladies did not reflect this significant improvement in conditions. Results…

Men

In somewhat drier conditions than of late, John Morris was the deserved winner with an excellent 62, Tony Kopczak 2nd on 63 and Hiro Ushido 3rd on 64. All very commendable scores which give an early advantage in the Grand Medal Trophy. R1 Leader board…

Ladies

As we started off in glorious sunshine, it was hard to understand the high number of ‘no shows’. A few hours later, we knew why! It was extremely muddy underfoot and we got drenched on the last few holes. The conditions kept the scores down, with Val back to winning form on 32 points closely followed by Jayne on 31 for the last round of the Eclectic on Duke’s. Results…

This was a reduction only round for handicapping.

Despite improving her score by 4 shots, it wasn’t enough for Val to catch Susan who maintained her lead to win the competition with a net 71 having knocked a further 3 shots off in today’s round. Final result…

Men

The final round of the Winter Competition was played in progressively muddier conditions with the later games suffering from persistent rain. All credit then to the Mandelbaum brothers taking the top 2 slots with Matt two clear of Simon on 29 points. Paul Doran played a splendidly competitive round after a layoff and finished 3rd on 37 on a count back from Simon. Results…

The runaway winner of the Duke’s Eclectic was Toby Hunt with an unbeatable net 59 after 50% handicap allowance – 3 clear of John Morris with Jon Cooper a further shot behind. Final result…

The overall winner of the Winter Competition Was Matt, 3 clear of John Morris and 4 clear of Graeme Syme. Well done Matt. Matt started the winter Comp off 24 and is now 19. Final result… | Dukes scores… | Princes scores…

For those with an analytical bent, 2 additional reports showing scoring analysis over the 2 courses from 14 November (when Winter Competition started – roughly equating to start of winter tees) are attached. Dukes scores… | Princes scores…

Ladies

The glutinous consistency of the mud had little effect on Cheryl’s game today. With an impressive 39 points on a tricky day to judge shots because of the conditions underfoot, Cheryl was the winner by 4 points from Jayne in a small field of 10 ladies. Results…

This was the final round of the Princes Eclectic and Jayne improved her score by an amazing 10 shots to finish with the same net score of 72 as Lia. However, Lia hung on to clinch victory on the back 9. Final result…

Men

Wet muddy conditions prevailed and it was decidedly nippy as the day progressed but there was only the one temporary green. Mike Rowe was the winner on 43 points, two ahead of Matt Mandelbaum and Mike Smeal. Results…

Back office staff in the Handicap Secretary’s office opined that the results seemed a perfect statistical fit to an SSS of 40 points and indeed CSS was unchanged.

Matt’s performance leaves him with a three point lead in the associated Winter Competition from John Morris with Graeme Syme one point further behind. R7 Leader board… | Dukes scores… | Princes scores…

John and Graeme finished as leaders in Prince’s Eclectic with net 59s with John shown to be the winner on a back 9 count back. Final result…

Ladies

The blustery conditions kept the ladies’ scores down to make it another QRO round. Lia is the lady in form and has followed up last week’s victory with another one, winning by one point from Sheena. Results…

After 3 rounds of the Eclectic, this week’s win has seen Lia move into first place ahead of Val with one round to go. Leader board…

Men

Graeme Syme shrugged off the windy conditions to win with 42 points, 3 clear of nearest rivals Tony Kopczak and Matt Mandelbaum. A high point of Graeme’s round was an eagle 2 at the SI 1 7th – well done! This is the first eagle of 2011 and accomplished at the same hole that David Marsh a few years back. Results…

CSS remained at SSS 40 points (65). Men’s handicap list…

Graeme now leads the Winter Competition by 5 clear points from Matt. R6 Leader board… | Dukes scores… | Princes scores…

On a blustery day, the new Lady Captain followed her excellent shot for her drive-in with a magnificent 39 points, leaving the rest of the field trailing 10 points in arrears, with Sheena in second place. Results…

Not surprisingly, this has put her into the lead at the half-way stage of the Eclectic, with Sheena again in second place. R2 Leader board…

Men

The wind featured but otherwise conditions were fair and it was surprising that scoring was so low. Tony Kopczak was the clear winner on 36 points, one ahead of Toby Hunt and 3 clear of Russell Cavell, Simon Mandelbaum, Jim Deissler and Ed Henery. Results…

Tony was the only Cat 1-3 player (and only by 2/10ths of a shot) to come within 2 of SSS 38 points and so SSS fell -3 to 35 points with only Tony receiving any handicap reduction. Men’s handicap list…

After 2 rounds Val still leads the Eclectic, followed closely by Lia after today’s winning score. R2 Leader board…

Men

New member Jon Scriven emerged the runaway leader with 45 points – well done Jon. Maintaining his consistent form, Graeme Syme scored 40 points to finish second. Tony Koczak, Hiro Ushido and Simon Mandelbaum followed 2 points further back. Results…

The competition was a non-qualifier for handicapping purposes, with 2 temps and the high probability of the course varying by more than 100 yards from the measured course. Further good play from Jon could see his handicap cut under the General Play provisions.

In the associated Winter Competition, Matt Mandelbaum leads Graeme Syme by 2 points. R3 Leader board…

And in the second round of the Prince’s Eclectic, Kerry Sargeant leads John Morris by 2 with a net 63 after ½ handicap allowance. R2 Leader board…
