June Monthly Medal

Women

Just a small select group of 5 playing today.

Although there were 4 of us in one game, it was only on the shorter holes from 14 on that the 3 in front got a way from us a bit. Guess they finally started to hit straight tee shots and kept to the short stuff, though one had 11 on the 18th. But although they’ve cut a second cut the rough is still penal, but we certainly ended up finishing with more balls than we started even if some of the originals made their escape.

Despite Ronnie telling us that she had no incentive after her playing partners NR’d on the 8th, her scorecard would dispute this with a back 9 that was 13 shots better than her front 9, dropping just 5 shots on the back 9.
Unfortunately for her, although Sheena’s back 9 was 4 shots higher than hers, Sheena’s front 9 was 10 better than hers giving her 1st place with a net 70 and Ronnie a 72.

Men

A hot and sunny day was promised and ensued;

Kim played a captain’s innings for a 64 – always good to end on a birdie; Kim was one ahead of midweek winner Ross. Ross had best front 9,best back 9, and best gross with 4 birdies. His handicap index drops to 3.7.

3rd round GMT leader Brian M had 66 and consolidates his position leading GMT 206 from Richard O and Jannesd 210.

2nd cut for rough helped but still 14 NRs.

Oh, England won a football match.

2021 Home Leg – Rickmansworth Friendly

Posted in Rickmansworth

This Saturday 6 pairs faced off in the home leg of the annual friendly vs Rickmansworth. Playing conditions were pretty decent. Kim and Ryan Dewar were playing catch-up from the go. Things looked pretty dire when they went 3 down after just 3 holes. But some good iron play by Ryan allowed the lead off pair to square things off on hole 12. They even briefly took the lead on the next hole. Only to lose that slim lead on the next hole. Both teams stood on the 18th with the visitors 1 Up. The match ended in a real anti-climax when only 1 player (the visiting captain) managed to put a ball in play. RPGC – Tricky Ricky 0-1. Richard Owen and Sazer Cuneyt were in a real tussle the whole round. They managed to make something out of nothing when they won the last hole to earn a respectable draw. RPGC 0.5 – Tricky 1.5. Alan King and Rick Kimber played a steady round to earn the home team’s first victory RPGC 1.5 – Tricky 1.5. Surprise package of the day were Tony Kopczak and Mike Shabani who demolished their opponents 6&5 (they recorded a 4BBB stableford score of … 48pts). RPGC 2.5 – Tricky 1.5. Alvaro Garcia-Hoz and Uli Katte were able to increase RPGC’s lead with a solid win. RPGC 3.5 – Tricky 1.5. Sean Thomas and Damber were in control of their match for 13 holes. A few uncharacteristic errors lead to a heartbreaking loss on the last hole. Final Score RPGC 3.5 – Tricky 2.5.

Return leg on 11-Sep promises to be (even) tougher than expected but we’ll give it a shot.

Friday Stableford Sweep

Posted in Competitions

After an overcast start to the morning the sun soon came out and it was perfect weather for golf. Most of the field recorded respectable scores but nobody scorched the course, probably due to the long grass present beyond the fairways and semi.

Early leader in the clubhouse was Ann Gardner with 35 points, with a strong start to her round, a wobble on the middle and a steady and consistent final 7 holes. Richard Norden then overtook Ann, posting 36 points (18 points out and another 18 points back). Ben and Louis Dickey went out mid-afternoon and so it was early evening before their cards were submitted, Ben scoring 35 points and taking over 2nd place from Ann with a better back 9.

Anniversary Accumulator (Rd 1 of 4)

Posted in Competitions

The field enjoyed very nice weather. Some crazy ginger even claimed that he likes the current layout of the course. Strange people these Northeners. 21 players (i.e. 36% % of the field) disagreed with him and NR’ed today. Staying clear of the rough was the best course of action. Ross returned an excellent result of 73 gross (60 Nett). His margin of victory would even have been more impressive had it not been for an ugly 6 on the 18th. Woman in form Cheryl “unfollowed” Rickie Fowler and swapped her Sunday tangerine outfit for more “classic” colours. The change didn’t affect golf karma (or “Momentum” as Keith Cassidy would call it). A very impressive 2nd place (67 Nett – despite a few wobbles around Amen Corner) can only be called a very good day at the office.

High on his excellent performance in the NAPGC Bourne-Vanheck Trophy Angus sailed to 3rd place. 4th place must have looked like a very distant possibility for Alvaro after an untidy front 9. But coming back 1 over par (a bogey on the last hole) made the impossible all of a sudden possible. Oliver Khan, MW Captain Henry (who will kick himself for his score on holes 12 and 18), Thierry Andretta and Gina complete the Top 7.

Ross is the comfortable leader in the Anniversary Accumulator standings after just 1 round.

Platinum Jubilee (70yrs 1924 – 1994)

Posted in Competitions

Weather conditions seemed perfect for golf with just a passing shower, not too sunny etc.

It suited Shaun who won with a fantastic 62 from Richard I 64 with fine glorious 65s from Denis P and Cheryl [the in form lady with a 64 from Wednesday]. Keith Cassidy commanded best gross

Perhaps it was the impact of earlier rain in week thickening up the rough but there was a high incidence of 19 NRs although PCC remained at zero.

Friday Stableford Sweep

Posted in Competitions

Although the BBC weather forecast early in the morning was mainly dry with a few occasional showers, this had changed by 9am to 80% rain and even that was an understatement – in fact the 18 hardy competitors and 2 players playing for handicap were subjected to incessant heavy rain. Seven players (and a dog) quite understandably ‘gave up’ part way round, however the rain didn’t seem to affect John Ahad’s golf with an impressive 37 points and was like ‘water off a duck’s back’ to Damber who posted 33 points but could quite easily have had 37 points too if regulation 2 putts hadn’t become 3s on several greens.

Midweek June Medal (MW GM Rd 3/8)

Posted in Competitions

According to PGA.com the probability of hitting a hole in 1 is 12,500 to 1. It is becomes even crazier when you get 2 players acing on the same day. So well done to John Perkins and Julie Ryan (in chronological order)  for achieving this remarkable feat on the 2nd hole. See report immediately below*

What a difference a couple of summer days make. The soft fairways and receptive greens were a distant memory today. Remember the rain from a short while back? The thick rough is the only indication of the downpours from a couple of weeks ago. So you needed to be precise (or lucky) off the tee.

Today’s winner is Cheryl with an excellent score of 64 (Net). She was a model of consistency (45 on front and back 9). Richard Back is on a roll. Strong of his win last Sunday he jumped on an early tee slot and calmly carded a round of +3 gross. He recorded 2 5s on the back 9 (13 & 18). But still finished with a stronger back 9 to beat Charlie Edwards on countback. The women seemed to enjoy today’s conditions. Besides today’s winner Cheryl, Ann Gardner recorded an excellent score of 66 (Net). VC John Ahad, Angus “Braveheart” Robertson and John “Ace” Perkins were just 1 shot back from the leading women. Richard Hanna used a better back 9 to hold of Joe Goncalves.

Angus takes the lead in the Midweek Medal Trophy on 206 (closest competitor is on 211- cf. attached).

Friday Team Competition (1,2,3 waltz)

Posted in Competitions

Our first Friday team competition was played in fine, mainly sunny early summer weather conditions and competitors seemed to enjoy playing as a ‘team’ for a change. With all the recent rain the fairways were softer than they will become and the semi-rough & rough have become ‘lush’. The only down side was the 4-ball of golf novices on a ‘day out’ in front of us, who caused a horrendous ‘back up’ of games over the front 9.

The winning team, with a total of 76 points, was the socially distanced Adrian Wells (who was card marking in an early game) together with Ann Gardner and Jeremy Prescott, playing towards the back of our main group. Together they went out in 37 points, mainly due to Ann’s personal 21 points, and then came back in an even stronger 39 points, this time mainly due to Adrian’s 22 points, but Jeremy pitched in with 2 and 3 points on the front and back 9s when needed to.

It was close between 2nd, 3rd and 4th places (73, 72 and 71 points respectively) with the team of Julian, Naveed and Tim clinching the runner’s up place with 39 out and 34 back, and Alvaro, Alan and Kevin posting 39 out and 33 back. So it seems both of these teams ran out of steam on the back 9, particularly by comparison with our winners.

The sweep monies will be shared by the winning team members.

We will have another team event in 3 weeks time.
