Spring Weekend Away 2024
Everyone’s hopes were high that we’d experience some decent golfing conditions at Donnington Valley having heard that they’d been allowing buggies for most of the winter. Unfortunately the recent deluges prohibited these and trolleys were sliding around in many places but we played the full course. Although very lucky in that it didn’t rain, the wind on Saturday and more so on Sunday was somewhat of a challenge, as was scoring for most people. With no run on the fairways and approaches to the greens being very soft, it was galling to see a ball that landed on a green run all the way through.
None of these issues affected Paddy, who was the highest scorer on both Sat & Sun and the only one to get into the 30s with his amazing 36 points (& he was 2nd man on Friday). In 2nd place was Brian, some 12 points further back.
The women were playing for the Lockie Trophy which was probably won with the lowest ever score of 47 points by Sheena. In 2nd spot was Angela on 42.
Despite this we managed 7 birdies on the par 3 9th and James went one better with an eagle on the 7th – so there were some good moments!
Another successful weekend after a lot of hassle this time with a late venue change, brings to an end Cheryl’s reign as the organiser and many thanks go to her for all her hard work in making them go so well.
Spring 2023 Weekend Away
15 women and 9 men finally made their way to the Cotswold Golf & Country Club, the venue that was booked when we went into lockdown. It didn’t start on an auspicious note with the rain putting some off playing and everyone else finally going out for just 9 holes. Fortunately conditions only improved and Saturday’s and Sunday’s results don’t indicate there was much of a problem for some at least.
Romping off to a great start was Susan with 40 points but she peaked too soon and was beaten by 2 by Katharina whose more steady 35 and 36 points gave her 1st place and winner of the Lockie Trophy. It was definitely a weekend where the Germans beat the Brits, with Uli coming into great form on the Sunday to score 44 following a 33 on the Saturday. Ever steady Jon got 36 on both days to come 2nd.
As usual there were individual and team day prizes and nearest the pins
‘Women’s’ Weekend Away
As with everything else, this hasn’t happened since Covid so it was a welcome return to the usual calendar or events. A smallish group of both golfers and non-golfers made their way to the Essex Golf & Country Club. It is fair to say that everyone was both delighted with the lack of traffic en route and the course which was very long (over 6,000 yards even off the red tees) but also very flat with lovely grassy fairways.
With such a long course, scores were generally on the low side, but experience helped and the highest scores made by both the men’s and women’s overall winners were on the Sunday. Interestingly there were more men than women which must be a first at this event and their results were very tight with Suhail taking 1st spot with his 39 points on the Sunday from Colm, both scored 68 in total. The women were of course playing for the Lockie Trophy with Joan taking it home with her after her 37 points on the Sunday to beat Sheena by `1 overall with 67 in total.
There were the usual prizes for the Saturday and Sunday competitions in addition to the overall with no one eligible for more than one win along with the team awards.
This was a first for Julie Ryan on both the attendance and organisation of one of the weekends. She probably thought she could relax once she’d arrived, only to hear from 3 separate groups on arrival issues necessitating some quick games re-arrangements! All was duly sorted and a good time was had by everyone with thanks to Julie for all her hard work.
