Winner: RPGC
2nd place: Putney Park
This competition is for the five Association clubs that play at the Park. Traditionally, the winner and runner-up teams qualify as the Association's entrants for the following year's Kelso Hamilton event that is a fixture of the Surrey County Golf Union. On the day, just RPGC and Putney Park made an appearance, therefore both teams automatically qualified for the 2008 Kelso Hamilton. However this did not stop both teams playing for the honour of being the leading club. The format for the event is 4-ball better-ball Stableford (played off 3/4 handicap) with two pairs per club.
The chaps from Putney Park were slightly taken aback to discover that
the Richmond Park team comprised the pairing of Peter Harrington and Ron
Linden plus Julie Smith and Sheena Harrington. The Putney Park men
admitted that they had never read the right hand side of the scorecard
so it came as a surprise to see the different stroke indices, and also
that some of the men's par 4's are par 5's for the ladies.
Both the Club's pairings excelled against their opponents. Peter and Ron won by a margin of 41 points to 33. Julie and Sheena had to lose one shot each by virtue of the SSS vs Par differences and yet still won by a margin of 40 points to 38. Both games were played in excellent spirit and apart from a torrential downpour at the halfway stage the day was about as good as it gets at the Park. But of course winning does make all the difference!
