Pairs Better Ball

Father Christmas tapped the Competitions Secretary lightly on the shoulder, saying “Let the result stand this time”. With his partner Cheryl on 47 points, first prize seemed in order. “But Santa, there’s been a clear breach of Rule 31-4 [see below ***] the CS stammered. “I know, but let it stand this time – tis the season for goodwill and you can just make out from the smudges on the card they marked who scored what”.

“Well OK, if you say so Santa, but next time in a pairs competition the rule will be applied” sighed the CS.

And so, Phil Flanagan & Molly Hood are declared winners on a back 6 count back from Paul Grand and Cheryl Woodhouse – each pair going out in 24 and back in 23. In third place with best of four 46s were the Shropshire Lad and Stanley Hunt. Results...

*** Rule 31-4. Scoring
The marker is required to record for each hole only the gross score of whichever partner’s score is to count. The gross scores to count must be individually identifiable; otherwise the side is disqualified. Only one of the partners need be responsible for complying with Rule 6-6b. Incorporating the results into the aggregate Winter Competition, David Marsh is now the leader – 5 points ahead of Geoff Foreman with Toby Hunt a point further behind. Champagne Chase

LADIES

The bottle of champagne first prize went to Anne Koychev with 37 points. This included 24 pts on the front 9 with birdies at the 2nd, 4th and 7th holes to go out in 3 under par. Though Anne scored a disappointing 13 pts on the back 9, this was enough to hold off the Lady Captain who took 2nd place on 36 pts with Norma Lynch in 3rd with 34 pts. Results...

Since there was a "bucket" hole on the one temporary green (17th hole), this was not a qualifier for handicap purposes.

MEN

Winter Competition Rd 2

LADIES

Maureen Slade nipped Ros Lake in Round 1 of the Princes Eclectic with 36 points. Results... and R1 Leader Board...

MEN

Prince’s again offered good scoring opportunities in benign conditions, but nobody would have predicted two 45s – from Julian Ratnage and Steve Peacock. Julian prevailed on the back 3 and has obviously recovered from a broken finger. Captain Martin Wright was 3rd with a brilliant 43 points and Jack Koychev took 4th sweep prize on 42. Results...

With the diameter of the hole exceeding 4¼ inches on the 6th, the competition was not played within the definition specified by the Rules of Golf. Winter Competition Rd 1

LADIES

Kate Friswell edged Norma Lynch in Round 1 of the Dukes Eclectic with 37 points. Results... and R1 Leader Board...

MEN

Scoring was generally good in conditions of melting frost through the round and temporary greens (bar 2 -thanks to Ian Smith). The first 4 places all had over 40 points – 1st Toby Hunt 43 points with a very tidy and consistent gross 72 personal best; 2nd Geoff Foreman 42 which unfortunately a ‘blob’ at 1st; 3rd David Marsh 41 from Jason Johnstone also 41 on the back 9. Results...

The Winter Competition so far naturally mirrors Sunday’s results. R1 Leader Board...

The Eclectic with ½ handicap allowance demotes players yet to score at a hole and favours the lower handicapped player who loses less handicap. Nevertheless, Toby has a healthy lead on 66½, 3 ahead of Kerry Sargeant. Last year’s winning net was 63 which looks set to be beaten at this stage – though much can transpire (e.g. we recall John Bennett’s hole-in-one last year. R1 Dukes Eclectic...

Inspired by the novelty of the event, Paul Grand conducted an analysis of the scoring. He found that 12 was the most common score on a hole followed by 23 with expected value 22 closely behind. The highest score on a hole was 34, occurring once on the SI 1 7th from pair Jason Johnstone & Mark Bean - they had a roaring first 9 start of 195 points but 3 single point holes on back 9 caused them to fall down the leader board. Fixture List Change

The Committee has published its solution to the open fixture this Sunday. Essentially the events that had been scheduled for the following three weeks have been moved forward one week and a new event, Aussie Pairs, has been fixed for the 31 October slot. Fixture List...

Aussie Pairs is a new format to the Club. Here's how it works. Played in pairs - full handicap - score as in stableford except you work out your PAIR score in the following manner: the lowest score of the pair goes in the 'Tens' and the highest in the 'Units'. For example if one player scores 4 for 3 and the other 6 for 1 the PAIR score would be 13. Similarly if both players scored 5 for 2 the PAIR score would be 22, and if one player scored 3 for 3 and the other blobbed the score would be just 3. The pair with the highest score wins.

Scoring proved tough with the rough but this proved no hindrance to Stewart Kendall’s 66 who cut a swathe for Phil Flanagan to follow with a 70. Rod Hill fought his way to 3rd on 71 with Julie Smith 4th 73. Andy Furniss would have been 4th but did not sign his card (but Ole did, twice!). Di Jackett looks to be back in playing form finishing 5th on 74. Results...

In the Anniversary Cup, Phil Flanagan now heads the leader-board on 138 chased by Rod Hill, Ros Lake and Julie Smith. With 2 more Jubilees left the competition remains an open contest. R2 Leader board...

Ladies Monthly Medal [4 May]

Despite good weather, the Dukes provided a challenge for the May Monthly Medal, the best score being Julie with a net 75. Veronica was second, 2 shots behind. No-one played within 2 shots of SS, hence the competition was a Reduction Only round for handicap with the CSS increasing to 74. Results...

Coronation Cup [29 April]

The Coronation Cup was keenly contested and the matching cards process provided a worthy winner in Paul Patching playing off 8 @ 66 from Stuart Nash also 66. One shot further behind were Paul Appleton and Peter Harrington 3rd & 4th. Results...

The greens needed a further cut but otherwise Prince’s provided a challenge with CSS unchanged from SSS 67.

Ladies Spring Meeting Medal [29 April]

In total contrast to the previous week, the day dawned warm and sunny and we had a good turnout of 19 ladies playing in the individual medal round.

Congratulations to Kate who won with a net 69 (not quite bringing her playing handicap down but cutting her exact to 27.5!) closely followed by Veronica with a net 70. Sheena took the Best Front 9 prize (net 34½) and Maureen the Best Back 9 (also net 34½). Results...

Many ladies enjoyed light refreshments in the sunshine at the Barnes Home Guard afterwards, where Sheena handed out the prizes for the Spring Meeting and for several other competitions from earlier in the year.

Spring Mixed [26 April]

The sunny weather had brought all the happy hackers out. Dave Williams & Jan Oliver came through a pretty tortuous 5.5 hour round as winners. More...

Ladies Spring Meeting [26 April]

The day was cold, windy and very wet, resulting in only 3 gallant pairs playing in the four ball better ball stableford.

Since there are 3 prizes for this event, everyone was a winner! Congratulations to Lia and Jan who came 1st (36 pts), Sheena and Cheryl who were 2nd (34 pts) and Jini and Ros who then took the Best Back 9 prize. Results...

A sparkling performance from Paul Appleton @ 63 gained victory in the first of the four Anniversary Trophy competitions. For his sterling efforts Paul has been cut to 9.7.

Anthony Williams came 2nd for the second week in succession, four shots behind. Peter Harrington and Phil Flanagan took the remaining sweep positions, both @ 68. Results...

Monthly Medal [14 April]

The first competition of the season off the back tees saw some good individual scoring but also a number of high scores at individual holes resulting in many Clause 19.8 adjustments.

The overall winner was Ed Easton with a splendid 67 which included an 8 at the par 3 9th (having attracted penalty under Rule 14 – Striking the ball). Anthony Williams was 2nd carding 68 followed by Jack Koychev and Bill McSorley both with 70s. With Ed electing not to enter the sweep, 4th sweep prize fell to Rod Hill on 71. Results...

Monthly Medal [12 March]

Gordon Alexander proved the worthy winner with a gross 74 net 63, highlighted by a one over par front 9 and finishing gamely with a 4 at 18 (first ball being lost) –promising material for team selection. Ole Leon-Martin played well to finish 2nd with 65, as did Ian Smith 3rd 66; Glenn O’Grady finished 4th with 67, but the 4th sweep prize fell to Mark Bean with Glenn not entering an envelope. Winter Competition Rd 8 [25 February]

The final round of the Winter Competition was played in cold and windy conditions which clearly influenced the scoring. Three competitors returned 35 points and matching cards placed Stuart Nash 1st from Tom Scarr 2nd [back 9 then back 6] from Ian Smith 3rd [back 9]. Treasurer Dave Williams eclipsed (the welcome return of) Rod Hill to 4th [back 9]. Results...

The highlight of the day was an ace at 9 from John Bennett – well done John. Further reference will be made in an imminent issue of The Recorder.

On a technical point, no Category 1-3 competitor scored within 2 of SSS 38 (66), resulting in a deemed CSS of 35 and a Qualifier for Reduction Only round in which nobody was raised .1. This is the second time in a couple of months that this has happened for the last 3 years or so.

The results of the Winter Competition confirm Julian Ratnage as the winner on 123 points with Geoff Foreman runner-up on 119 points. Well done especially to Julian in his first year with the club. Final Results...

The Duke’s Eclectic was narrowly won by Paul Grand from Ian Smith by one net shot (i.e. after 50% handicap allowance). Paul says "A lucky birdie at 18 clinched it". Final Results...

Monthly Medal [20 February]

Some excellent scores were recorded – notably from Tom Scarr 1st (who carded level par 69 with 3 birdies and no dropped shots in a back 9 32), Erik Petermeijer nett 62, Jack Koychev 3rd nett 65 (which included 8 on par 3 10th and obviously recovered from injury), and Stanley Hunt 4th on 66. With Tom not in the sweep, Paul Appleton (also 65) picks up the 4th place sweep prize. Results...

After 2 rounds of the Grand Medal Trophy, Toby Hunt (aka Mr 59 2nd) leads on 126 followed by Messrs. Bennett and Smith both on 130. R2 Leader Board...

Winter Competition Rd 7 [13 February]

In windy conditions it proved difficult to score well, but Toby Hunt emerged the winner on 36 points followed by Ian Smith, David Marsh and Julian Ratnage all with 34 points. Results...

With just 1 round in the Winter Competition left, Julian Ratnage is now 4 points ahead from Geoff Foreman. Leaderboard...

In the associated Duke’s Eclectic, Paul Grand is 1 shot clear of Ian Smith. Leaderboard...

Winter Competition Rd 6 [5 February]

Sunday’s clear winner was Julian Ratnage – clearly having a purple patch with 44 points, 2nd Bill McSorley 42, 3rd Ole Leon-Martin 39 and Rob Urquhart 4th with 38 points. Results...

Julian’s 44 points propels him to the top of the Winter Competition leader board ahead of Geoff Foreman and with 2 rounds on Duke’s left in the competition will be hard to beat.

Sunday was the final round of the associated Prince’s Eclectic in which Ian Smith held on to win ahead of Messrs. Grand and King. Results...

Pairs Better Ball [29 January]

Jason Loubser and Julian Ratnage are confirmed as winners with 47 points. Julian scored 28 points on his own account on the front 9. Whilst he fell away on the back 9, Julian could well feel the gaze of the handicapping committee on his future scorecards.

Worthy of mention also was Tom Scarr (5th with Kerry Sargeant) who, playing off 8, scored 40 points on his own account. Where was Kerry? Results...

Winter Competition Rd 5 [22 January]

In sharp contrast to the previous week, scoring proved relatively easy generally. But continuing his winning streak, Geoff Foreman proved the worthy winner on 45 points followed by Julian Ratnage (but no comp. entry/sweep envelope returned) on 44. And 3 points further back were creditable performances from Bill McSorley and Paul Appleton with 41 and the Jon Cooper 40 points. Results...

A clear leader has emerged in both the Prince’s Eclectic and Winter Competition – Ian Smith with no fewer than 4 birdies in the former. Messrs. Harrington/Williams and Grand lead the chasing packs respectively.

Unified Handicapping Scheme [22 January]

“Altogether Now”- it’s official! UHS handicapping goes ahead following LGU AGM. Click here for an early report.

Changes to the handicapping system will mainly affect ladies (but click here for some info).

Rights and obligations of players are set out in Clause 13 of the handicapping rule book. And whether a lady or man please use this on-line Away Scores Form as a convenient way of advising your away Qualifying scores to the Handicap Secretary.

The Bournemouth Open [19 January]

A number of members often make the trek to Bournemouth for their week-long Open in June. Applications are now invited for the 2004 event. We have been advised the organisers now offer a web site www.bournemouthopen.net which is also available from our Links page.

Club House Facilities [16 January]

Our man on the spot, Paul Grand, sent in the following report.

"There are still no ladies loos – they are scheduled to arrive next Tuesday 20th. This may inconvenience some, but they will be relieved to learn that they can spend a penny at the nearby BHGA.

Avis is still in business and has a refreshment vehicle in the car-park just before entrance to courses. A wooden building akin to the cycle one is apparently the most likely immediate replacement when the old building is demolished.
"

Winter Competition Rd 4 [15 January]

Geoff Foreman triumphed in what proved to be difficult scoring conditions with 36 points followed by Martin Wright, Julian Ratnage and Ian Smith all 35 points with the back 6 deciding. Results...

Perusal of both the Winter Competition and Duke’s Eclectic to date reveals ties in both with Ian Smith and Paul Grand on 106 and 66.0 respectively – but there is of course a long way to go.

Ladies Facilities [13 January]

Peter Harrington has news about Ladies facilities following the destruction of the Richmond Park Pavilion Cafe on 2 January. Report...

"The ladies will be delighted to hear that it was planned that new ladies' loo facilities would be in operation as of today - I am sure that this news will herald a great relief. I cannot verify that this has happened, but the indication is that something convenient should be functioning before the weekend."

Monthly Medal [8 January]

Risen as a phoenix from the ashes is the following report from Paul Grand on the first competition following the destruction of our Club house by fire.

Winner of Grand Medal Round 1 and the millennium fire extinguisher is Toby Hunt (aka Mr. Fahrenheit 451) @ 59°, fired up in a round that included incendiary devices at 5 & 7 with only 3 duds at 4, 12 & 16. Simmering nicely @ 62° was John Bennett whilst fuming on 63° was Dave Lawrence (electing to play off 26, not 27 his actual playing handicap – as students of Clause 19.8 might query but understand from his 1.6 not 1.2 cut) which cost him £2.70 in the sweep. On the back burner was Ian Smith @ 64°. Results...

Clubhouse Fire [2 January]

The Richmond Park Pavilion Cafe was destroyed by fire on Friday. The Pavilion was used by the Club as a Clubhouse and as a public cafe and bar. Click here for the Secretary's message and dramatic pictures taken opportunistically by a Club member.
