A drizzly start was punctuated eventually by bright spells and the passage of a cold front heralding a colder easterly airflow.
In such conditions, Geoff Foreman returned 38 points with an impressive front nine 22 points. Pat King chased with 36 and Team Ludlow Ruffian Michael Hinks-Edwards claimed 3rd sweep prize with 34 points – and a welcome deposit towards the exciting 2006 Bournemouth Open week in June.
Three guests - Tom Mahoney, Peter Jagger and Tony Spicer - joined the festive round. Results...

The deserved and clear winner by 3 points is our Treasurer, Dave Williams who returned 40 points scored in frost and fog that came and went (possibly exacerbated by the fuel fire). Gurpal Sekhon and Tony Pickard challenged with 37 and 36 respectively. In the ladies section, Tracy Wright put in another sterling performance for 35 points. Results...
With at least 9 temporary greens, the event was of course a non-qualifier for handicapping purposes.
A warm portacabin fire welcomed all – along with some drinks refreshments ‘super-cooled’.
LADIES
Well done to Tracy Wright who with a net 68 earned her third
consecutive monthly medal. In 2nd place was Jan Oliver with a net 74.
Results...
This was a non-qualifying competition for handicap.
With only one round to go in the LGU Silver Medal, Tracy Wright has a
virtually unassailable lead thanks to good performances in the last 3
monthly medals. In 2nd place is Sheena Harrington.
Again with just one round to go in the LGU Bronze Medal, Cheryl Woodhouse leads by 7 shots over Ann Gardner.
MEN
Bill McSorley clinched the medal with a barn-storming 61. A birdie at the first set the tone for the round and but for a 7 at 16 a 59 or lower was on the cards. Excellent scoring followed from Messrs. Fogarty, Sargeant and Eden with 63s and 64s, with special mention for Kerry with a level par 69. Results...

Di Jackett romped away to win the Ladies' Champagne Chase comfortably

squeezed into 3rd place on 33 pts but only by a nose from Tracy Wright
(best back 6 actually!).
Results...
The CSS
remained unchanged at 38 pts, unfortunately not enough to cut Di's
playing handicap.
MEN
Winner of the bottle of champagne was Peter Harrington with 41 well deserved points - closely followed a point behind by Ian Smith and Arthur Dolby. Results...
CSS remained
at SSS 38 points and
Peter earned a handicap reduction to 12 (the only playing handicap
change).

18 provisional greens posed no problems to Sheena Harrington who was
the clear winner in the Ladies Stableford competition with 34 points. In
2nd place, after several week's break from golf due to injury (beware
the injured golfer!) was Lia Donath on 32 points.
Results...

aforementioned provisional greens.
Sheena takes an early lead in the
Prince's Eclectic
on net 81½ with Julie Smith in second on net 85½.

In 2nd place was Peter Harrington on 43 pts with Jason Loubser two points further adrift in 3rd. A special mention to Tim Meyer who was helped to 4th place with a hole-in-one at the 10th hole! Results...
There are no handicap changes since this was a non-qualifying round.
Richard Owen has taken a strong lead in the
Winter Competition
after 2 rounds played (84 points), nine ahead of Jason Loubser in 2nd
with Tim Meyer and Peter Harrington joint 3rd on 74 points.
The Prince's Eclectic results will be available when Paul returns from holiday!
LADIES
Proving that several weeks' break from golf doesn't necessarily harm your game, Di Jackett won the first round of the ladies' Dukes Eclectic with 33 points, with Jini Beacham one point behind in second. Results...
Since the scores were relatively low, this was a Reduction Only round
for handicap.
Only 3 ladies - Sheena, Jini & Cheryl - managed to complete all the
holes for the Eclectic. Sheena currently leads on net 86.5 (off half
handicap).
MEN
Graeme Syme put together a solid opening Winter Competition round winning on 41 points, two ahead of Toby Stevenson and Dave Williams. Results...
Reflecting the benign conditions, scoring was generally good,
elevating CSS to

top at present are Paul Appleton and Dave Williams on 71.5 after half
handicap allowance.
In her 21st year of golf with the Club, Julie Smith managed to win the Dowling Cup for the first time with an aggregate score of 423 (best 6). Veronica Mitchell was 2 shots adrift with last year's winner, Sheena Harrington, a creditable 3rd on 426. Results...

For the second month running, Tracy Wright clinched the Monthly Medal
with a net 72, a good score in the nasty weather and wet course
conditions. Sheena Harrington came 2nd (net 76) beating Maureen Slade on
the back 9.
Results...
It was a Reduction Only round for handicap.
MEN
Considering the variable weather conditions, scoring was remarkably good. Top honours went to Arthur Dolby with net 61 (which this could easily have been in the 50s but for some errors on the closing holes) ahead of two 64s from Kerry Sargeant and Peter Harrington. Re-joiner Dean Morgan hit the ground running with a 67 off 5. Results...

Lissaman Cup (3 clubs & putter)
Fresh from France golfing, the Duke’s course no doubt appeared a pitch and putt to Ian Smith and he set about demolishing the course in style with a 66, four clear of nearest competitor John Bennett.
Considering the handicap of just 3 clubs and a putter, scoring was reasonable but a number of no returns were recoded – a combination of poor shots and losing balls amidst leaves, uncut fairway and rough. On balance, the clubs restriction affected the ladies more with best score from Sheena Harrington at 78. Results...

Scoring was lower than might have been expected, but the highlight was undoubtedly Stan Pott’s hole in one at the 14th. Well done Stan!!
It is believed this is the first in an RPGC competition this year Ian Smith aced at Duke’s 16th on a match play knockout.
The 5 points arising helped Stan and partner Lee Eden to claim the trophy on the back 9 from Stuart Nash and Jim Fogarty. Results...
Autumn Meeting Better Ball (Ladies)
The ladies had a well-attended second half of their Autumn Meeting playing a 4-ball better ball followed by tea and snacks in the ‘clubhouse’. With Cheryl providing not only the food but also the camping stove from which teas and coffees were made, a cosy gathering was had. Outstanding monthly medal glasses were presented along with prizes for both the day’s event and the autumn meeting medal round.
A few eyebrows were raised when the results of the day were announced since Sheena, Cheryl, Maureen and Lorna were all playing in the same game! However, the results were achieved in very different fashion with Maureen and Lorna dovetailing in good better ball style whereas Sheena & Cheryl took one 9 each in the scoring. Results...
LADIES
Tracy Wright clinched the October medal with a net 69, three shots clear of Maureen Slade in 2nd. Results...

The handicap secretary’s office was impressed with a run of five 3’s from Bruce Cuff and an eagle for the handicap secretary at 15. Congratulations to Bruce on his achievement, and taking just the minimum 5 rounds to win. Final results...

In a rare moment of reflection , the Handicap Committee exclaimed Eureka! in having solid evidence of what score a scratch player under ideal conditions should score (to prevent SSS possibly being increased from 67 to 68 by SCGU).
CSS was reduced by 1 to 66, with Bruce being cut back to playing off scratch and Jim Fogarty now playing off 21. Men's handicap list...
Translating the scores into the Grand Medal Trophy to date, it can be seen that Julian Diamond now heads the field 5 ahead of Paul Appleton. Statisticians will observe however, that Bruce need score only a 75 in round 8 to overhaul Julian – and there are other possibilities as well, naturally. R7 Leader board...

LADIES
The ladies began the day in style with a glass of pink cava, mementos of the day and to top it all a new rule book encompassing the local rules. The alcoholic start set Julie Smith up in style to win the Lady Captain's prize and she was heard to say that she should perhaps start each round this way if this was the effect it had on her golf (so look out for her appearing with a flask in future!). Carding a net 69 she dropped only 3 shots in the first nine and despite the effects of the cava wearing off over the back nine, dropped only a further 6 shots. Veronica Mitchell, who has been desperate to cut her handicap and finally succeeded last week, didn't let it impede her golf and came in with a net 71 to be second on the day. Results...
The ladies also had a putting competition which was a closely fought contest (for some anyway if not the Ladies Captain). There was a 3-way tie at the top with Christine Stewart, Janet Fox and Ros Lake all finishing on 29 putts - well done ladies!
Nearest the pins were won by Cathryn Leftwich (9th), Juliie Smith (16th) and Julie also won the nearest in 3 on the 10th.
Greenside bunkers attracted a 50p penalty for each visit on the day, unless you got up & down in 1 with the proceeds going to Cancer Research. The club collected £50 which was not down solely to the inaccuracy of the RPGC golfers, it also included some generous donations. Many thanks to all those who went in the sand and to those who added to the collection.

Due to a bucket hole on the 5th temporary green, this was a
non-qualifier for handicap purposes - so Ros's handicap remains intact!
MEN
Two superlative scores were returned from winner Stuart Nash (57) and Adrian Wilder (62). Results...
Stuart’s 57 could have been a lot lower if he’d not had an 8 on a par
4 and might well have broken the Club net over the last 12 years or so.
Due to the size of the hole on the temporary 5th green, the competition was a non-qualifier for handicap purposes. Scratching heads and with hands tied (try it) , the Handicap Secretary’s Office was unable to cut Stuart due to CONGU decision 15 regarding clause 19 (the ‘observation’ clause) since a low score in a single event is not sufficient to justify a cut. Rest assured however that Stuart and Adrian’s performance will be held under close review. Men's handicap list...
Following an informal request to the course operators, holes cut conforming to the size defined in The Rules of Golf should now appear on any temporary green.
The impact of the results on the Grand Medal Trophy reveal only 2 players having completed 5 rounds (& without disqualification) – a deserved Julian Diamond leading on 359 followed technically by myself 48 behind –so with 3 rounds left it’s still very open. R5 Leader board...
Ruskie Hall took the first 3 places with Alan Barclay the winner on 66 – considering RH only had 7 entrants this is a remarkable achievement. Leading the way for RPGC was Ian Smith 4th 68 and for the ladies, Norma Lynch and Jini Beacham both with 69s. Results...
