Commenting on his winning 65 in the Handicap Secretary’s office, the Open Champion was typically modest about his 65 –“I’d not had a good round for some time, and just concentrated on keeping my head still. Lucky birdie putts at 2 and 6 helped. And keeping out of the rough made the difference – though trebles at 3 and 14 on that account. Of course, some of our best competitors were simultaneously engaged in the Hawtree match.”
The men's CSS
was elevated to 3 above SSS @ 70 (almost a QRO round).

Men's Singles Match Play
Competitions
Report by
Jon Cooper,
Competitions Secretary
A very good turn out last weekend for these two qualifiers, with the top 15 and last years winners going into the seeded draws for the two handicap division competitions. Places in the JH Taylor Shield (handicaps 0-16) and the Two Courses Cup (handicaps 17-28) were up for grabs. More...
The condition of the course (fairways and tees like semi-rough, greens like corduroy with added bare patches for extra bounce and an ill timed decision to suspend winter rules to allow most of the mud on the fairways to adhere to the balls) made conditions difficult enough, without using the back tees and introducing a biting wind.
Not surprisingly scoring was moderate and net 69s were enough for the top three places. Robert Urquhart recalled his youth battling the Scottish winds to see off Anthony Williams for first place with Martin Wright in third. Qualifier results...
The draws have thrown up some interesting matches and we will be losing some very good golfers (and a few frequent playing partners) in the very first round. JH Taylor Draw... & Two Courses Cup Draw...
Hopefully the course and weather will quickly improve for these first round knock out matches. They need to be played as soon as possible - and latest by 23 May - to ensure we do not run into time difficulties later in the year.

Mixed Four-ball Match Play
Competition
Report by
Jon Cooper,
Competitions Secretary
Due to clashing with the Easter weekend, the entrants for this years mixed knock out totalled only 12 pairs, ensuring all of them qualified. Scoring was very close, with Jon Cooper and Di Jackett just piping Ian and Julie Smith for first place with Martin and Tracey Wright in third slot. Qualifier results...

which went to last years winners and the first three in the qualifier on

Qualifier for Mixed Pairs Match Play

Ed's Final Toast
In August 2003 Ed Easton made his initial enquiry for Club membership and since this time he has been a regular participant in our Sunday competitions.
Ed is returning to live in the States (Texas) in a few weeks and has limited opportunities for holding pre-departure drinks.
Ed has a prior engagement at the Half Moon in Putney this Monday 28th March at 7pm, and it has been decided to use this event as a final toast from the Club's golfing clan.
For those who are not familiar with the Half Moon it has a function room at the rear for live music. This coming Monday, one of Ed's US colleagues (a guitar coach) will be playing a session, therefore everyone will be welcome to listen in. Tickets for the function room are typically £2.50 or thereabouts - roughly the amount of tax in a pint of beer! If you are curious about Ed's choice of music, check www.sevensouth.com/recordshop/ClarkeCy/bio.php.
The evening promises to be a chance for everyone to have a good gossip. Hope you can make it.

A non-qualifier due to the bucket size hole on 14th nevertheless saw some good scoring off Duke’s winter tees (for last time in season) with Pat King and Toby Hunt on 40 points – Toby nudging Pat on the back 6. Jini Beacham led the way for the ladies with 39 points to come 3rd (a birdie and 2 ‘blobs’ included and coincidentally had the better back 6 from Kaare Langeland 4th). Results...

Men's Four-ball Match Play
Competition
Report by
Jon Cooper,
Competitions Secretary
Probably the best turnout of 2005 for this years qualifier, and unfortunately some good scores and promising pairs have fallen by the wayside. Fifteen pairs qualified to join last year's winners Paul Appleton and Dave Winter in the random draw for this year. Qualifier results...
Off ¾ handicap, anything less than 38 points was not enough to
qualify. Outstanding scores from Ian Smith and George Martin of 48
points (with 27 on the back nine) set the standard with 46 points the
next nearest from Peter Harrington and Jack Koychev.
The draw for the knock out is now on the website and will soon be on the Club house notice board. It would really help if pairs could add their email addresses to the draw sheet to make contacting for games easy. Fitting matches in is always tight for time, so please book up your matches as soon as possible.

The first 15 pairs qualify and it is good to see scratch/low handicappers Bruce Cuff & Kerr Sargeant just making it. Upon sweep reconciliation, no card was returned from the paring of Abdulaziz & Mick.
The handicap list now incorporates new member Osman Chaudry @ 22.0.
Captain v Vice Captain (Ladies)
With an empty slot in the fixture list the committee decided to test out the teams for the forthcoming Whitewebbs competition by pitching the squads for each team against each other in a match-play event.
To foster team spirit prizes were awarded to the winning team rather than just the individual winners! These were presented in Avis' hut afterwards accompanied by tea & buns.
Sheena(A) and Cheryl(B) as organisers of each team were the captains and the teams were split roughly into the A & B team squads. The competition was played off full handicap difference which is the new rule for the Whitewebbs.
The result was a comprehensive defeat for the Captain's team and much crowing from the Vice-Captain and team with the suggestion that the A & B squads were switched! In the event, once the Whitewebbs details were released, this is what occurred!
Both team captains are looking forward to a return match when a suitable slot in the fixture list occurs!.

the winner with just 1 round on Prince’s remaining.
In the associated Duke's
Eclectic, Ian Smith improved his score by two, including a superb
birdie at the 7th. However it wasn't enough to hold off a charging Geoff
Foreman who shaved his eclectic score by four. Both players finished in
a tie on a net 59. It was closely fought, with George Martin and Kerry
Sargeant finishing one shot further back, the latter with 7 birdies.
Sheena has made available on the Internet her photographs from the

An analysis confirms 2nd and 7th as having the highest success rate - 100%, whilst 8th and 15th the lowest - 40%. The most popular hole for playing a card was 12th whilst least 16th. Also of interest, just 2 players elected to play a card at a hole whilst not in receipt of a shot - John Bennett and the Paul Grand at 13th. Playing cards analysis...
