Rickmansworth Friendly
Report by Jon Cooper | Full match report

Nurturing a slender 3½ to 2½ lead from the home leg it was decided to put out as strong a team as possible to see if we could gain the necessary 3-All draw or better at 'Tricky Ricky' to win the cup back. Not an easy task given the 6:0 drubbing we had received the previous year there.

After lots of telephone calls and cajoling a suitable team took shape and duly decamped to Ricky. The pairs were a strong mix of old heads who knew the course and young talent with handicaps sliding downwards. So confident was I that I told them this was the strongest team I can remember taking and that if we didn't win this year we never would.

Some fine golf ensued with our top pairing picking up 46 stableford points in the sweep and our next pair a creditable 42. A great time was had by all and as always Rickmansworth treated us to some great hospitality and a filling meal afterwards.

Oh yes, and we lost. Six - nil.

Rickmansworth Friendly
Report by Jon Cooper | Full match report

Once again the first leg of the annual Rickmansworth friendly was held at Richmond Park. For both sides some of the usual faces turned up but there was also a fair smattering of new ones too which is good to see.

The Rickmansworth 12 looked very smart in their peacock blue outfits but the Richmond Park Eleven looked even more colourful in a rainbow display of colours that had the opposition confused for several holes. It was particularly worrying for the 6th game who were playing Gurpal and on the lookout for a player in camouflage. Once it became clear our Captain was bravely battling on his own his opponents slowly started to take charge and we were one down despite a plucky display by Gurpal.

Overall we turned out winners by 3.5 to 2.5. This is not a great lead to take to Rickmansworth where we lost 6:0 last year, so we will be looking for a very strong squad to take this year - we might even take 12 this time.

The date for the return is Sat. August 21st, so anyone in form might want to pencil that date into their diaries now before anyone tries to slip wedding anniversaries or Mothers 100th Birthdays in instead.

Windy conditions again prevailed and Paul Brown emerged to win the medal, 2 ahead of Ed Henery and Richard Owen. Graeme Syme was again on the leader board claiming 4th place with 70. Results...

CSS was elevated by 3 to 69.

Winter Comp Rd 6 / Princes Eclectic Rd 3

Ladies

The blustery conditions kept the ladies' scores down to make it another QRO round. Lia is the lady in form and has followed up last week's victory with another one, winning by one point from Sheena. Results...

After 3 rounds of the Eclectic, this week's win has seen Lia move into first place ahead of Val with one round to go. Leader board...

Men

Graeme Syme shrugged off the windy conditions to win with 42 points, 3 clear of nearest rivals Tony Kopczak and Matt Mandelbaum. A high point of Graeme’s round was an eagle 2 at the SI 1 7th - well done! This is the first eagle of 2011 and accomplished at the same hole that David Marsh a few years back. Results...

CSS remained at SSS 40 points (65). Men's handicap list...

Graeme now leads the Winter Competition by 5 clear points from Matt. R6 Leader board... | Dukes scores... | Princes scores...

And Graeme lies just one off the pace from John Morris from Kerry Sargeant in the Prince’s Eclectic. R3 Leader board...

30 January

Winter Comp Rd 5 / Dukes Eclectic Rd 3

Ladies

On a cold but sunny day, the 7 ladies who ventured forth carded an interesting collection of scores, both high and low which resulted in a QRO game. Lia was the winner with a consistent 17 points out & back, one shot behind was Christina who had an impressive 20 points on her back 9. Results...

Susan maintains a 3 shot lead in the Eclectic after 3 rounds over Val, Lia and Sheena. Leader board...

Men

On a good day for scoring, Paul Brown emerged as the winner on 40 points, 2 ahead of Richard Owen and Toby Hunt; CSS computed to 39 points. Results...

The leader in the Winter Competition with 5 rounds played and 3 to go is John Morris on 115 points, one ahead of Graeme Syme and two ahead of Toby Hunt. R5 Leader board...

John and Toby are currently tied in the Duke’s Eclectic on 63. R3 Leader board...

A glance at the ‘Pars’ reveals the consistency of Graeme’s game leading the season with 50 to date.

23 January

Four Ball Better Ball

Some good complementary play was in evidence and the winners on 46 points were Nigel Ward and Tony Kopczak on 46 points from Matt and Simon Mandelbaum. Early leading clubhouse pairing of Toby Hunt & Paul Grand finished 4th on count back with 43 points behind Graeme Syme and Craig Froude. Results...

Points were awarded against the men’s par and SI, the Committee deciding against the CONGU recommendation of play to the ladies par and SI. The handicap software only permits all players playing to one gender’s card or the other’s in pairs competitions.

16 January

Winter Comp Rd 4 / Dukes Eclectic Rd 2

Ladies

On a blustery day, the new Lady Captain followed her excellent shot for her drive-in with a magnificent 39 points, leaving the rest of the field trailing 10 points in arrears, with Sheena in second place. Results...

Not surprisingly, this has put her into the lead at the half-way stage of the Eclectic, with Sheena again in second place. R2 Leader board...

Men

The wind featured but otherwise conditions were fair and it was surprising that scoring was so low. Tony Kopczak was the clear winner on 36 points, one ahead of Toby Hunt and 3 clear of Russell Cavell, Simon Mandelbaum, Jim Deissler and Ed Henery. Results...

Tony was the only Cat 1-3 player (and only by 2/10ths of a shot) to come within 2 of SSS 38 points and so SSS fell -3 to 35 points with only Tony receiving any handicap reduction. Men's handicap list...

In the associated Winter Competition, Graeme Syme now leads by a point from Toby hunt, Matt Mandelbaum and John Morris. R4 Leader board...

Toby leads the Duke’s Eclectic by 1 from Nigel Ward after two rounds. R2 Leader board...

9 January

Winter Comp Rd 3 / Princes Eclectic Rd 2

Ladies

A lovely sunny day didn't seem to help anyone but Lia who beat the rest of the field and Alison by 8 points. Results...

After 2 rounds Val still leads the Eclectic, followed closely by Lia after today's winning score. R2 Leader board...

Men

New member Jon Scriven emerged the runaway leader with 45 points – well done Jon. Maintaining his consistent form, Graeme Syme scored 40 points to finish second. Tony Koczak, Hiro Ushido and Simon Mandelbaum followed 2 points further back. Results...

The competition was a non-qualifier for handicapping purposes, with 2 temps and the high probability of the course varying by more than 100 yards from the measured course. Further good play from Jon could see his handicap cut under the General Play provisions.

In the associated Winter Competition, Matt Mandelbaum leads Graeme Syme by 2 points. R3 Leader board...

And in the second round of the Prince’s Eclectic, Kerry Sargeant leads John Morris by 2 with a net 63 after ½ handicap allowance. R2 Leader board...

Millennium Monthly Medal / Team Event

Ladies

Great to be back on the golf course after all the snow.

Three ladies took advantage of the good weather on Sunday. Val stormed into the New Year with a superb 40 stableford points leaving Alison and Susan floundering in her wake!. Results...

Men

The winner of the monthly medal and Millennium trophy with 65 is Richard Owen. Perhaps Father Christmas gave Richard an indoor putting device since his putting was a sight to believe – especially from off greens into the hole. Second was Graeme Syme with a highly commendable 66 with Kerry Sargeant 3rd on 68. Results...

Conditions were favourable and CSS remained at SSS 66. Men's handicap list...

Richard also leads the 2011 Birdie tree. New member Chris Jones leads the 2011 ‘Twos’.
